Degree achievements and maximalization: a cross-linguistic perspective

This paper discusses degree achievements cross-linguistically, focusing on the maximalization possibilities reported in literature. I introduce a four-way typology where languages differ regarding whether they overtly mark (with lexical items) (i.e., scale of achievement is bounded an event) and/ or event there unique maximal denotation predicate), and account for variation. The four types are represented by English, which does not maximalization; Southern Aymara, marks but Polish, only; Hungarian, with additional requirement presence maxima (if available). provide tests to distinguish vs. maximalization. My proposal implemented Beavers’s (2011, 2012) Figure/Path Relation model, making use restricted set items suggest that examined exhaustive, discuss variation telicity contrasts arise as result different possibilities.
